Probably you haven’t heard, however it is being said that some hacked Facebook data recently ended up on BitTorrent, a popular online sharing application.
Every since it happened it was expected that eventually it would be downloaded by some unscrupulous torrenters. It was expected that they would try to download it and try to sell it to businesses. Well, it seems they didn’t have to – businesses are doing it for themselves.
The hacked data included 100 Million Facebook user’s personal details and it all surfaced on BitTorrent last week. If your information was apart of that hack, expect the direct marketing world, spammers and others to start coming at you real soon.
Although all the data was publicly available, this was the first time it had been so easily collated in a form that was ripe for exploitation by spammers. It has been discovered that major companies and organisations have decided to download the data as well. Using software called PeerBlock a reader of Gizmodo was able to find the IP addresses of the various parties currently downloading the Facebook data which includes companies such as Time Warner, Sun Microsystems, Motorola, Pepsi Cola and many others.
